Plastics- boon or a curse

Plastics role in our life:

Today, it is may be a little difficult to imagine our life without plastics.
Plastics are use in Toys, bags, combs, bottles, water pipes, electrical wires, pens, pots, helmets, airbags in automobiles, they are use in cell phones, computer, laptop, which makes modern life easy, also use in electrical equipment etc.
Problems arises when we use plastics excessively and are ignorant about ways of disposing of their waste.

Impact of plastics on nature :

1.All kinds of plastics give out harmful gases, upon heating and burning. These gases may cause many health problems, like cancer and asthma in humans.
2.Consuming food stored in plastic bags could be harmful to our health.
When people fill garbage in plastics and polythene bags and throw it away. When stray animals like cow look for food in these bags, they end up swallowing these and they die due to this.
3.The plastics bags thrown away carelessly on roads and other places get into drains and the sewer system. As a result, drains get choked and the water spills on the roads. During heavy rains, it might even create a flood like situation. In Mumbai, during one or two days rain, roads become choked with water and people suffer with it.
4.Plastics are non biodegradable and we cannot decompose because it can take 20 to 500 years to decompose.

How to minimise over use of plastics:

1. Reuse the bags whenever it is possible to do so without any adverse effects.
2.We should cloth or jute bag when  we go out for shopping in market.
3. We insist shopkeepers use paper bags.
4.Don't use plastic bags to store eatables.
5.We never burn polythene and plastic bags.
6. We always recycle paper.
7. We don't put garbage in plastic bags.
8. Aware your friends, neighbours and relatives to follow proper practices for disposing different types of wastes.
9. Store eatables items in plastic bags that are approved for such a use.
10. The government has laid down guidelines for recycling of papers.
11.Use three bins green, red and yellow bins which are given below.
12. Follow the principle of reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce means to minimise the amount of waste we create. Reuse mans to using items more than once.
Recycle means convert the product in new use instead of throwing it away.

E-waste management

     How E-waste create:

E- waste is an  electronic waste like
mobile, tablet, camera, laptop, tv, video game, charger, electronic item parts etc. that we throw in garbage when they are not useful to us i.e. called E- waste or Electronic waste.
Every day in electronic market many new electronic item launches daily and purchase them without any reason.
About 95% of india's E- waste recycled in the informal sector and in a crude manner.

United Nation (UN) report on E- waste:
A report presented by the United Nations on the E-waste in world economic forum on January 24, 2019 points out that the waste stream reached the 48.5 MT in 2018 and the figure is expected to double if nothing changes. Only 20% percent of global E-waste is recycled.

Effect of E-waste on Environment :

1. E-waste is nonbiodegradable.
2.  It makes the soil barren and poisonous.
3. The main reason is that e-waste contains several toxic chemicals like mercury and lead which are detrimental for humans as well as for the environment.
4.Landfilling releases these toxic chemicals into the environment, affecting the atmosphere and triggering severe health problems.

Solution for the problem of E-waste:

1. Sell your old electronic items.
2.Donate used electronic items to those who are unable to purchase them and they can be anyone like your friend, neighbour, relative.
3.When you purchase a new gadget first of all evaluate that you really need it or not.
4.Don't through rechargeable batteries in open areas because it contains lead and other toxic items which are not good for our environment.
5.Know about your local recycling options of electronic items.
6. Proper disposal and recycling are the best solution to save our environment.

Need of conserve water

Why should we conserve water ?

1. We all know that only a small fraction of water available on the Earth for the use of plants ,animals and humans. Most of the water is in the oceans and it cannot be used directly .The total amount of water on earth remains the same ,but, the amount of portable water is decreasing day by day.
2. The demand for water is increasing day by day. In many cities, long queues for collection of water are common. Also, more and more water is being used by industries. These factors are leading of shortage of water in many parts of all over the world. So, it is very necessary to save water.
3. Why we can't use ocean sea water:
• Oceans cover a major part of the earth.Oceans and seas has many salts dissolved in it ,the water is saline. So, we cannot drink it and other domestic, agricultural and industrial needs.
• The famous line of the poem "Rime of Ancient Mariner" written by S.T. Coleridge in 1798:
• "Water water every where
• Nor any drop to drink"
• Here, poet said that the ship lost in the ocean and they can't drink the water of ocean because it is not good for health.
• Ocean and sea water can also fail your kidney.

 Rooftop rainwater harvesting:

In this system, we collect rainwater from the rooftop to a storage tank, through using pipes. This water may contain soil and dust of roof and need filtering before it is used for any purpose. Instead of storing water in tank, we can go directly in the pit in the ground. This then seeps into the soil to recharge the ground water.
